I first went to Sengakuji Temple the burial site of the 47 Ronin about 20 years ago, just as a tourist thing and not knowing the background of the temple or the story of the 47 Ronin.

He let me, the reader, see the humanity of the people involved. Lord Kira, the villain of the story was NOT in fact corrupt, quite the opposite, he was a trusted vassal of the Shogun, Master of Protocol, and often acted as a messenger to the Emperor on behalf of the Shogun. His samurai retainers now become ronin, or masterless, and are dispersed. I believe that Allyn does a phenomenal job at illustrating this culture and the beliefs of the Japanese society, both of the samurai who become ronin, as well as the higher up, wealthier men in this era to his audience rather well.
