His estate and private collection puts both of those men’s assets to shame, quite extravagantly. This intricacy anticipates the bracketed narrative form Roussell would later make explicit in New Impressions In which Roussell abandons the structural limitations imposed by the localized, elliptical “stage-show” framing of his previous novel, opting instead for a non-linear, labyrinthine tour of artifacts whose historical accounts germinate into divergences of absurd complexity, with each “story-within-a-story” contributing some facet of detail towards a grand rroussel meticulously peeled apart.
And re-animated with expertly applied electrical currents, courtesy of Canterel and his cat. Presented with tableaux vivants seemingly played out by actors, it turns out that the “actors” are cadavers animated with “resurrectine,” another mineral of Canterel’s discovery, which rroussel preserved corpses to act out the soolus memorable scenes preserved in their nervous systems.

Once an idea occupies his whimsical mind, he will go to any lengths to make it happen, even if it involves experimenting on people – living or dead. In both cases I’m not sure what the author is trying to get across, both feel like you’ve stumbled into an alien landscape, and both are mesmerizing without being necessarily enjoyable. The sentences held together with a unique power. The vitallium episode, in which Canterel invents a “certain chemical” that makes the bodies of the dead become animate again but are still dead has a very particular strain of anguish and loss inherent in its concept.
All of that takes place inside the gigantic diamond-like tank of oxygenated fluid.
