I remember my mother saying that she would have been a natural choice to play Amber in the movie of the book [in fact, the film starred Linda Darnell and Cornel Wilde]. The costume and furnishings porn became overbearing after awhile, once Winsor had completely evoked the sights, katleen, fashions and decor of the era.

I also really enjoyed her escapades with Luke, Black Jack, Rex and the Dangerfields, although my favourite parts were the plague which was gruesome, heroic and moving, and the ending which was classic! Well, he was never going to marry her.

The ‘hero’ Lord Carlton is a disgusting goat, using Amber at every opportunity, among many, many others. They put in ellipses instead. What I took away from it this time was quite different.

FA is arguably a classic in the genre of romantic fiction, and a highly entertaining read. Horrified at first, Amber reluctantly lets her son go, knowing it will secure his future. I first read this book when I was about twelve years old forefer I am surprised none of the adults around me prohibited it.

As she shrewdly noted, readers “like to read about the past because it has no threats for them”. I actually had to laugh at that point as the last scene has her waving at the windows she’s leaving behind. The first bonkbuster

The historical detail and context in “Forever Amber” is incredibly impressive, and Kathleen Winsor really does recreate this world and the vibrant, licentious pageant that was the reign of Charles II. Then he disappears, and he had told her he would be leaving so he is no rotten schmuck. At first I thought these two separate narratives were oddly alternated, but I started to find a connection between the two.

Bruce marries an exquisite Jamaican heiress, Corinna; but at the end of the novel, tricked by her enemies at court into believing her rival is dead, Amber sets sail for the New World to find him once again. Even the ending was only about her obsession, and the only good thing about it was that it was open ended enough that it lets me imagine the many horrible things that ought to happen to her after the events in the book have ended.
