I thought I knew much of Strahd’s story, but this shed some light on parts that were unclear and helped develop his character in a manner that added in a straahd way.

All of which add up to something that is compulsively readable. Even at his most loathsome, though, his honor drives him to protect the weak or at least the loyal and drives him to brutal revenge not strahx in his own name, but in the names of those who served him so faithfully.

Though this novel lacks the baroque sensuality of Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire or the streetwise humor of the author’s own The Vampire Filesit is an exciting and original vampire tale. A well written stradh entertaining gothic novel with not a sparkly vampire in sight. May 09, Erika rated it it was ok Shelves: So, I thought, meh, 3 stars. That book actually has a sequel I, Strahd: It’s incredible to watch his descent from determined and honourable soldier to self-serving and self-absorbed vampire. At the risk of spoiling what happens, Strahd, using dark magic, turns into a vampire and just destroys these men that killed off the wedding party guests.

The floating, mist-like people behind him is an interesting touch, but I’m not really sure what they represent other than the mists. It was a z way to foreshadow upcoming events. I can safely say that this one will go back to the used book store with no hard feelings.

There is no depth, no background, no ‘history’. Brutal and ruthless, he still possesses a keen intellect and an memoird personal code of honor, which makes him a freshly unique character in a world of monsters.

But I don’t cower in fear from them either, like your garden variety pious person.

I personally never got into the Forgotten Realms, but I always kept a look out for the Ravenloft novels. It has that 90’s cheesy factor to it. I am not saying that his life after his change was not filled with loneliness and despair, just that I wish some of his extreme evil deeds had been addressed.

I liked who Strahd was avmpire the first half of the book, and ended up being disappointed to see his character change like that. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. Sometimes you find that nostalgic read that takes you back to being a kid, and you smile from start to finish… this was not one of them.


The Genie’s Curse Birthright: As good as Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter but takes itself more seriously. As a youngster I read Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Apparently they reprinted it along with several other books in the series inbut by that point I had long moved on to other things, though had I known I would have probably bought a new copy.

Oh yeah, the book. Strahd’s personality changes surprisingly little, remaining mostly in the realm of Grumpy Old Man with overlays of Emo Teen, occasionally punctuated with vampiric animal kinship oddly reminiscent of Straahd. An episodic story covering a total of years in Strahd’s life, this book has it all.

All in all a pretty good, non sappy vampire story that is a definite throw back to the old, scary kinds of the undead.
