The author presents himself merely as the ever so humble editor of a biography written in the future of a fictional person. The teachers usually regarded such sallies with understanding benevolence. The main protagonist here is Joseph Knecht, a brilliant man who grew up and studied in Castalia and later bacame its Magister Ludi. But these are frivolous issues.

What I was going to say, before I interrupted myself, was that this novel is a German novel written in what might have been a German century. Since his childhood, Knecht has been consumed with mastering the Glass Bead Game, which requires a synthesis of aesthetics and scientific arts, such as mathematics, music, logic, and philosophy, which he achieves in adulthood, becoming a Magister Ludi Master of the Game.

I’m ashamed to say I’ve only read one book on this list – Ulysses – and enjoyed it. They suggest that from the very beginnings of culture, this primal ground of insight was available to us, and that it remains with us unaltered even in the highly sophisticated intellectual culture of Castalia.
