The mountains in these parts are legendary among climbers — from all over the slopes there are superb views, not only of the Eiger but also of the Wetterhorn and other peaks.

The powder slopes from the Eiger’s glacier are also wonderful if you reach them first! At the foot of First are nursery slopes, a ski school and kindergarten. Intermediates will find the most to attract them above Grindelwald and in the Jungfrau as a whole.

However, there’s enough that’s been updated sko the years to keep the area in contention as a modern-day ski region. First has about a quarter of the Jungfrau’s skiing – fivelifts serving 50km 31 miles of runs, whilst the joint area with Wengen is the Jungfrau’s largest having 20 lifts serving km 63 miles of trails.
The high ratio of chairs, gondolas, funiculars and cable cars trams to drag lifts and the varied natural terrain also make Grindelwald a good choice for those seeking easy uplift and exciting downhill. I thoroughly recommend the Jungfrau region for a ski holiday. Or you can cross the Kleine Scheidegg by lift and ski to Wengen from where a shorter train ride links to Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg.

Few Alpine landscapes can have attracted as much attention from mountaineers and spectators as the legendary backdrop to this most traditional ski area. Tuition is available from three schools, underlying the resort’s significance in the ‘boarding world, let be the Private Ski and Snowboardschool or the Ski and Snowboardschule Grindelwald. Indeed the resort is busy year round and has a distinctly cosmopolitan air, attracting guests from all over the world giving a diverse ethnic mix in clientele rarely found in other resorts.
Ascending by a train tunneled deep into the heart of the Eiger, they emerge at 3,m on the edge of the Aletsch glacier – the biggest glacier in the Alps and the source of the river Rhone. The village can feel very jolly at times eg during the snow-carving festival in January, when huge sculptures are created.
Other Resorts in this country. Of the more conventional uplift, Grindelwald has Europe’s msp gondola it’s more noticeably slow than long, but they tend to keep quiet about that. Murren Access to Murren’s skiing covered by aki ‘Sportpass Jungfrau’ from Grindelwald is by train or road to Stechelberg, then cable car to Gimmelwald and on to the Schilthornbahn, or by train or road to Lauterbrunnen and cable car up to Grutschalp, continuing to Murren by train.
Hotel Eiger offers 4-star comfort, several restaurants, and large wellness area, in the centre of Grindelwald and within view of the glacier. However there is plenty happening – initially at establishments such as the Challi s,i which has live music, as does the up-market hotel Regina – or the Expresso. You don’t take skis anywhere near the biggest mountains unless setting off with a guide on a big ski tour to the south.
