In order to relieve herself of her utter boredom, she sets out on a pilgrimage, but it turns out that the gods are not quite done with her.

This not being chlion Vorkosigan book it took me a while to settle in, to get used to the unfamiliar world, people, and situation.

The arch-villain Dy Jironal was a standard evil chancellor. Let me say however that I was drawn into Lupe dy Cazaril’s saga from the first words of the book and never lost interest. There are bujolr of beauty and lots of quiet, good humor, that are brought to vivid life by a sharply-drawn and entirely believably human cast of characters.

The second costs a lot more to read it, but I was not knowing what was happening until I bought the complete novel. The prequel The Hallowed Hunt takes place in the Weald to the south of Chalion and two to three hundred years earlier. Upon arrival, he learns that Bergon had been his seat companion for a time as a galley slave. I actually found myself really enjoying the political machinations we were seeing unfold.

There is no noticeable otherworldly aura of power and wisdom about him view spoiler [the saintly aura around him later in the book notwithstanding… But I figure the actual aura around him then is too literal a demonstration of what I am trying to say hide spoiler ]. I kept wanting to call them Tiddles and Beetroot. Lois McMaster Bujold was born inthe daughter of an engineering professor at Ohio State University, from whom she picked up her early interest in science fiction.


This was for me a very pleasing book and an enjoyable experience, and I plan to read the sequel s.

Bujold is a master at avoiding the fantasy novelist’s most common storytelling mistake. Plus, the writing is lovely, and Lois Bujold’s sharp wit and irony shines through memorable passages.

This is a slower book for sure, but I think it really does pay off and the second half of the story really got all fired up fast. In this universe a few human events of mythical or miraculous proportions gain a reality. He’s fought for various people and at many different battle-sites. Fantasy religions in fantasy books as a rule don’t offend me of course some are meant to be offensive, I’m not speaking of those here.

But those books merely repackage Biblical themes in fantasy window dressing in order to preach to the choir; they never really go beyond a routine reworking of good-vs-evil to explore the actual role chhalion theology to a culture.

World of the Five Gods (Publication) Series

Perhaps it would have deserved four stars, but I recognize that I was somewhat stingy in assessing “The sacred quest”, and I also liked that Lois Mcmaster Bujold has inspired my country and its history to create his fantasy universe. I know that I will like the prose, I know that the characters will be interesting and believable, I don’t know if I will like her plot because sometimes I don’t, but even then her books are never unreadable.
