I was yawning by the time I was a quarter way into the book because things were so boring. And there’s the world-building. Everything was going swimmingly until Drustan and Ana met. In Bridei’s destiny is to one day become king, the druid Broichan and his secret council have worked hard towards this even before Bridei was born. After the first few sentences I was completely captured by this book and the story.

This one was so filled with action, with intrigue and with ancient religious practices some that was severely creepy to me! I found the character Faolan so intriguing in the first book, but in this book he totally comes to life.

We are told that “oh, they will go study now” and “they studied geography all day” chronkcles that kind of thing, but never are we shown that they have learnt new things that will help them in life.

The fleshing out of Ana and Faolan were well-done. In this novel, it’s obvious from chroniclee get-go that Bridei was going to get some kind of happy ending. The book does have a lot of good stuff, but it never quite reaches amazing. Worth reading if you’re a fan, but not her best effort. Early on I thought I might give it 4 stars, but now I can’t bring myself to give it But Ana understands her duty.

Or the complete lack of a plotline. The kid is supposed to be frikken smart. They planned every step and every aspect of Bridei’s life, save one. I’m on to the next book, so I’m thinking that after the entire trilogy is complete, I’ll get that mind-blowing experience that I’m accustomed to.
