Very applicable and timeless wisdom. Without cultivation everyone is a clown and needs polish, fine attributes notwithstanding. Centuries later we see people, society and their perception and judgment didn’t really change that much at all. Fashions have their periods and even the greatest virtues, their styles. Martin Fischer, I presume, is a literalist translator, for Gracian did have that difficult-to-understand writing style where sentences were incomplete and there was a severe lack in verbs.
I own Martin Fischer’s translation and when I opened it up to read it, it made no sense to me grammatically or syntactically.
