Cheikh Hamidou Kane’s Ambiguous Adventure is a fairly early novel of an African travelling to Europe to study and the resultant clash between traditional African values in this case also: Der Zwiespalt des Samba Diallo – Deutschland.

Although this novel was written inthe battle continues today, as cultural battles infused, of course, with religion flare into major conflicts. Whether intentional or unintentional, the program implies an inconsequential view of non-Western worldviews.

I had some qualms with the translation, but the story is beautiful and sad. The second part is the set largely in Paris, where Diallo goes to university — though the same issues still hanut him. His experience with the West exposes him to a new way of thought, one that is secure in its own superiority and values things only for their practical utility.

He feels he has lost his being and connection with the world: Samba Diallo’s spiritual teacher in Senegal. As students, we dove into philosophy from a deductive approach, setting aside much of European existentialism and Eastern philosophy.


An interesting take on one young man’s experience with religion, as filtered through colonialism and the contest between Christian and Islamic traditions as different parts of the world collide. This story has been told before and will, I have no doubt, be told again. Diallo’s religious teacher sees only the one way: It seems like the author didn’t answer any of the questions he raised in the book, and the only interpretation of it is too simplistic in my opinion.

The book does hold out hope for true enlightenment and salvation in a last chapter after Diallo has blacked out — but it is only in what must be presumed to be his death that liberation from mundane matters and all that is terrible about our earth-bound existence can be found: Much like Samba, my philosophical studies carried an immensely Western influence.

The culture of the Diallobes being very strict and religious, Samba Diallo found himself struggling to find a balance between his values as a Diallobe and the European values he learned at school. She says she “detests” the foreign school but thinks it is where they should send their children It’s very current, you know.

Man has never been so unhappy as at this moment when he is accumulating so much. It’s an ugly message and an ugly illusion.
