Soler composed more sonatas in a relatively moderate tempo than did Scarlatti; the acciaccaturas dissonant notes played quickly in between harmonic tones so germane to Scarlatti’s style rarely appear in Soler’s works; and Soler made frequent use of Alberti bass patterns, which Scarlatti avoided. Samuel Rubio and so all have ‘R’ numbers assigned.

While both Samuel Rubio and Frederick Marvin antonkothe two leading Soler researchers, originally attributed the work to Soler, there has been some question as to the authorship.

The virtual craze subsided in time, but not the power of a work that obeys the basic rules of a quick-moving, minor-key folk dance in triple-meter, with alternating measures of tonic and dominant harmony in the bass line, above which the melody is elaborated.


Pianist Santiago Rodriguezwho has played the work often as well as recorded it, remembers that it sounded “vaguely familiar” when ffandango first studied the music — “a walking bass, anonio to a street musician’s, simple without being provocative. A fandango once attributed to Soler, and probably more often performed than any other work of his, is now thought by some to be of doubtful authorship.

As if all of these duties and musical endeavors were not enough to occupy his waking hours, he also found time to invent a tuning box that he called an afinador or templantewhich used plucked strings to divide the 9: The composer rarely allowed his portrait to be painted, presumably due to modesty; this would be commensurate with his character as a man of humility and simple tastes. While Soler occasionally toyed with the form of theme and variations, there are no other published pieces that compare in length and magnitude to this one.

Period scholars early Classical period, of Iberian concentration remain divided about its authenticity, although no one disputes the work’s brilliance or prodigies of invention, given that it lasts minutes, depending on the performing artist.

The instrument used in the recording an 8-foot single-manual anfonio was built by Paul Y. P robably the fadnango famous, and certainly the most played, of Soler’s harpsichord works is the ubiquitous, dazzling Fandango R. By a curious coincidence, both of these composers began their career in the Benedictine monastery at MontserratSpain. One is accustomed to finding frolicking roseate cherubs, not to mention languorous saints, in eighteenth-century churches, but this for the Escorial is almost as if the College of Cardinals were to break into a jig!

The “del Gallo” sonata is presented here as Sonata ; the listener may readily perceive the meaning of the reference.

However, soleer did note in his critical catalogue published inthat: Though there may be valid reasons to suspect the truth of this theory, still it would be not at all surprising to find that a man of Soler’s wide-ranging interests could compose such a masterpiece.

Although pianists have and do play Padre Solrr ‘s Fandango the Escorial owned at least one early fortepiano while Soler lived and worked therethe work was virtually unknown to twentieth century listeners until Rafael Puyana featured it on a Philips stereodisc of Baroque harpsichord music.

The Infante was a talented student, and many of the harpsichord sonatas were probably composed expressly for him.
