I really hated this one so much.

A classic, but there are some better Christies. The techniques pioneered here have simply been re-imagined too many times–or in lesser hands just outright copied. I highly recommend Agatha Christie. Cristie breaks the Van Dine’s 1st and 2nd rule here and the ridiculous business with dictaphone was just too much. I hated this book I’ll give 4 stars again. I guess in the end, his helpful nature came from a place of careful fear and blatant egotism.

Poirot narrates this tale but there is something in the asfsinato he uses to describe some of the people that just makes it seem odd.

Suffice to say that there is nothing wrong with having an unreliable narrator; indeed, such a device figures large in much great literature, but the narrator must not trick the reader. They’re quick reads, however, and it shouldn’t take more than a weekend in an ancestral mansion completely isolated by the heavy rains, sharing the cavernous space with a man who uses too much eye make-up, a faded flapper with a bejewelled cigarette holder, a rather “mannish” woman who knows best about everyone’s business and would be your personal fave for the first one to be knocked off unless you’re shea nervous butler, a silent, dour old housekeeper who knows all the back passages and all the secrets, a fun-loving young thing just turned twenty-one who has an obvious “thing” for the twenty-three-year-old ex Flying Corps captain who jumps nervously when the sweet young thing’s car misfires, and a host of backstairs people who make it possible for meals to all be taken at precisely the right time after the second gong and clean up afterward without ever being seen This one has 3 chapters before the murder happens, too many complex characters introduced and just too much attention to details is what killed me as a reader, which also happened by chapter 3.

Christie should have pointed doubt somehow in the mind of the reader that the narrator should be suspected only then it would have been fair. I had a lot of agaatha and suspicions for the main ending but none of them came to be true.
