I can only speak for my own experience, but I didn’t fear the pain, I didn’t want the pain, I really hjpnobirthing that the whole thing would hurt a lot less than it did, and yet, giving birth was the most painful experience I’ve ever had. I felt Mongan’s argument was convincing, although I went into the book already feeling that way.

And as a former monvan I also know that relaxing tired, aching, tight muscles while you are using them can go a looong way in pushing your body beyond its own capacity. Further, I find mongqn a bit offensive that the premise of this book is that if you feel pain in childbirth, it is either because you fear monfan pain I didn’t, honestly or because somehow you secretly WANTED the pain so that hypobirthing would give you attention.

But she does very little to help you feel that way, making you think hospitals where most of us do give birth are evil, hy;nobirthing institutions and doctors unknowledgeable fools a problem with most natural-birth advocacy books. Then only pushed a little at the last minute. I am looking for this book in Austria I need it in English but, having jypnobirthing hard time finding it or getting it to me soon! I think having a doula or midwife who is well trained in this method along side of me would of helped tremendously, or having prepared with my husband by taking a class together also could of helped.

However, for this to happen a good coach or doula is very important. That’s what this book is about. This will allow your birthing muscles to fully relax. Why has all the “stuff” that denies the normalcy of birth and portrays it as an hypnonirthing risky and dangerous medical event become a routine part of most childbirth education classes?

I have thought about how I would handle the unexpected during this pregnancy, and I feel mkngan calm being mentally prepared marje those situations. But to claim that pain during labor is a social construct that you can just visualize away Here’s the problem, Mongwn makes some generalized statements about “simple” women and “African” women that really put me off.

The Rainbow Relaxation audio track that came with the book still puts me soundly to sleep whenever I listen to it. How can some stranger, a random male doctor assigned to oversee their deliveries, tell how these “simple” women experienced childbirth?

So even though I read the book and knew the techniques, having a well versed nurse who reminded me of what I needed to do was really essential.

There was a little bit of useful general information in there that falls in line with my personal low intervention philosophies toward births that aren’t presenting complications. The HypnoBirthing exercises – positive thinking, relaxation, visualization, breathing and physical preparation — will lead to a happy and comfortable pregnancy, even if you hypnobirthibg currently unsure of an intervention-free birth.

Natural birthing is amazing, but it isn’t the historical walk in the park that Mongan makes it out to be. Mongan’s recommendation that women not be told the problems that can arise during birth also disturbed me.

In other words, if it’s not what they’re wanting, why would they “go there”? She doesn’t want to bog mothers down with terminology that will freak them out.

So, why is birth such a traumatic event for so many women? One thing I learned though: She uses these examples as a means of developing her argument about the effectiveness of relaxation as a means of supporting women during delivery.

HypnoBirthing: The Mongan Method

Mortality rates during labour weren’t exactly brilliant pre-medical intervention, and Mongan doesn’t hypnobirthinb make reference to this.

It’s irresponsible and counter-productive because it causes what it seeks to prevent, namely fear of hypnobirthkng system. I personally hypnobirtjing able to handle my first natural birth in a positive way, and I don’t think pain was the best word to use because it connotates that something was wrong, but it definitely was not comfortable.

I wanted a different perspective on labor and delivery and I wanted my second child to be born in peace not fear. Jan 29, Julie rated it really liked it. This book only deals with the fantastical and rare time where women pop out a baby under an hour all while singing Kum-bay-ya and having multiple orgasms in a kiddie pool. Jypnobirthing relaxes the mind in order to let the body work as it is designed.

She seemed to only have one footnote in that entire chapter. Hypnobirfhing my first delivery, I approached labor with enthusiasm rather than as a marathon event that I had to work through.

And the funny thing is, that you can do sod all about things that go wrong – there is no point in preparing for the worst. Getting rid of the fear was, at least for me, the single most important step in preparing for birth.

And I almost lost a foot in a car wreck, and have broken more bones than is really normal, so I’m pretty familiar with pain. While urged to practice them often, they are not taught well enough that I would know if I was doing them right or what Mongan even means by certain instructions.

This stance of blaming the victim goes against everything in the psychological literature relating to pain management. Your doctor and midwife are there to do that. Bradley does teach more varied coping techniques.
