We are able to discern the beginnings of Mahayana within the Buddhism of India, but it began to flower and bear fruit in earnest as it encountered and spread among different cultures. It has three volumes, and the last volume is the “zokuhen” or “subsidiary texts whose authenticity is problematic”. This Gosho was written at Matsubagayatsu, the Daishonin’s residence at the time, and was dated May 28, Finally, I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to those who have assisted with the preparation and editing of this dictionary. On the fiftieth anniversary of that gosh event, it is my pleasure to witness the publication of a new English dictionary of Buddhist terms, The Soka Gakkai Dictionary of Buddhism. Dated Februaryit was written for all his followers and was entrusted to Shijo Kingo, a samurai and a disciple of the Daishonin.

From the point of view of Buddhist doctrine, it discusses the vital importance of repaying debts of gratitude, especially to a teacher, and concludes that the way to repay such obligations fully is to embrace and propagate the Mystic Law.

It has not yet been translated into English. Mind, however, is not limited to mere process of thought. It also recklessly mixes forged letters with authentic letters of Nichiren, so there is no way of knowing which is which.

Buddhism aims to shed light on and thoroughly examine the complex inner realm of the human being and thereby provide a broad and comprehensive overview of life itself. It attributes the disasters befalling Japan at the time to the people’s slander of the Lotus Sutra and belief in false forms of Buddhism, particularly the Pure Land Nembutsu sect.

Nichiren Buddhism has inherited the zemshu expressed in the sutra that all people are capable of achieving Buddhahood, and the great vow of the Buddha to enable all people to do so. The school of Buddhism known as Pure Land attributes salvation to the power of another, gowho is, to the saving grace of Amida Buddha, while Zen Buddhism advocates salvation through the power of self, or the discipline of seated meditation. It maintains that Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the teaching for the Latter Day of the Law, the current era roughly beginning 2, years after Shakyamuni’s death.

Within this universal religion called Mahayana Buddhism there are some ideas that appear to be contrasting or contradictory. Nikko Shonin designated ten of Nichiren Daishonin’s writings as the most important of his works. Nichiren Daishonin wrote this thesis over a two-year period while in exile on Sado Island. Listed in chronological order, these ten are briefly described in the following paragraphs, including the background and main points.


This new dictionary focuses largely on Nichiren Buddhism. Buddhism places strong emphasis on the human heart and mind. It points out the errors of the various sects and their deleterious effect upon the country. Global peace will, therefore, be realized if this principle and its practical application are shared among people.

This writing has not yet been translated into English. It asserts that during this time period shakubukuleading another to the correct Buddhist teaching by refuting his attachment to heretical views, is preferable to shoju gradually leading another to the true teaching without refuting his misconceptions.

The rest of the gosho may or may not be authentic but that in no way affects the truth of the Daishonin’s Buddhism. The Lotus Sutra, however, sets forth principles that resolve and integrate those apparent contradictions.

All this Energy pushed toward a positive Goal! It is the perspective of Buddhism that both conflict and peace arise from the human mind. NO ONE in any scholastic circles uses it because it is so sectarian and unreliable.

An early Buddhist text known as the Dhammapada reads: It predicts that two further disasters, internal strife and foreign invasion, would occur if the country zzenshu its support of mistaken teachings and heretical priests. Also written on Sado Island over a two-year period and dated April 25,this Gosho was entrusted to Toki Jonin, a government official and an early convert to the Daishonin’s teachings.

Works “whose authenticity is not established, yet which traditionally have been highly valued from the standpoint of doctrine or of faith” were included zennshu with the fully authenticated writings in Vol.

In the fall ofthe Soka Gakkai published The Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, which contains English translations of fully half the writings in the Japanese edition, and those translations have been enthusiastically welcomed by persons interested in Nichiren Buddhism.
