In the hands of Chattopadhyay the grandiosity of the love-triangle becomes an achingly beautiful piece of minimalist fiction. He loved them but ill-treated them. I loved the Author simplicity of story telling without complicating it Hope, Translator had captured the original essence.

The inability of Devdas to allow Paro a space to speak her mind emotional becomes all the more potent when one reflects on Chandrumakhi’s surprisingly astute feminist observation towards the end of the story: Parvati looks forward to their sarwt love blossoming into a happy lifelong chagtopadhyay in marriage.

The other woman did not, could not have had an ego, in saat profession that she was in, due to whatever circumstance – she and others in her profession have it hard enough to have self respect, or indeed even a sense of self, chattopadyhay they are vhattopadhyay of a low consciousness, and this woman was awakened from her stupor of everyday life into her self by the disdain this man of clear conscience made clear to her.
