The voice is original, the characters are real, the language is startling and beautiful. Although the plot is suspenseful, gritty and entertaining, where the book really delivers is the character interaction. And the boy crush is beauty, with a bad streak. Am Viki being harsh or am I? Mim tries to fight him off and escapes only by a whisker when his sister opens his bedroom door. I needed to know how things would turn out for all of them, Mim, her mother, and Mim’s friends.

And I qanted thrilled with Mim’s happy ending, even though it might stray a touch into the realm of wishful thinking. And Jordan, the boy she sent Valentines to for years, why is he now suddenly a creep? I don’t even really know what to say about this book. Mim has to try and keep the bad news from her mother until she figures out what to do—and not helping is the bastard wife-beating neighbour’s monster dog, Gargoyle, who has taken up residence in the Dodd family’s shed-cum-stash.

Vikki Wakefield is an amazing new Australian author for teens. And her thoughts on her situation eved seem particularly insightful for someone so young: Now Mim has to retrieve a lost package for her mother.

I found the front cover Fascinating because it looked like a girl so I think I could connect to the character. When I described this book to my friends, they were shocked that I would categorise it as a young adult text. This is such a marvellous book and Mim is a character I really liked and was on side with—she’s not always right, but she’s always determined and brave.

Despite the grim setting, the characters are richly and lovingly drawn with smart-mouthed, determined Mim a particular delight. This would make a fantastic school character study as the reader gets to know the main character so well.

Friends who don’t change overnight and turn into complete opposites of each other. The writing style in the first two chapters is slightly disconcerting at first. Mim knows what she wants, and where she wants to go—anywhere but home, stuck in the suburbs with her mother who won’t get off the couch, and two brothers in prison.
